It’s time to play the music…
Jim Henson loved music, therefore it became a huge part of the Muppets. From Sam and Friends lip synching to popular records to the creation of original music for the Muppet Show, Fraggle Rock and the original three movies.
There have been many musical performances and groups since the Muppets started, but none more popular than Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem!
Dr. Teeth
As the name of the band suggests, Dr. Teeth is the flamboyant leader of the Electric Mayhem. He rocks the keyboard along with lead vocals, though, occasionally, the other band members have had their turns at the mic.
He’s the most charismatic of all the members with his shining gold tooth, purple hat and outrageous wardrobe. But, I’m guessing that’s why he’s the leader.
Dr. Teeth has one of the more unique puppet builds with his partially see-through eyelids (which move) and his stretchy arms. This allowed Jim Henson to work the head of the muppet, while another puppeteer could work his hands.
Floyd Pepper
Though Dr. Teeth is the leader of the band, Floyd Pepper tended to be the most active. When there was conflict with other characters and the band Floyd was the one to protest, haggle or lead the group. He is even the one who takes the most responsibility for Animal.
On The Muppet Show Floyd was the band member to have the most solo appearances without the rest of the band.
Janice
This original valley girl is the only regular female musician on The Muppet Show. Her main instrument is the guitar, but she can also be seen playing the tambourine, trumpet and trombone.
Her other notable role is as Nurse Janice in Veterinarians Hospital, alongside Miss Piggy and Rowlf the Dog. She’s also in a relationship with Floyd.
Zoot
Zoot is the quietest member of the band, speaking very rarely. He’s the saxophone player not only for the Electric Mayhem, but also the Muppet Show orchestra and can be seen playing the opening and closing Muppet Show theme. He even gets the final note in every episode of the show.
Aside from the saxophone, Zoot has also been known to play other wind instruments — the clarinet, flute, and tuba.
Animal
Animal is the drummer not only for the Electric Mayhem, but also for the Muppet Orchestra. He’s a wild creature with rage issues and only two trains of thought – drums and women.
Animal’s crazy antics, one word primal dialogue, and mad drumming skills has made him very popular. The most popular of all the band members and one of the most popular of all the Muppets.
Lips
Lips was added to the Electric Mayhem as trumpet player during season 5 of the Muppet Show. He continued to be a part of the band in The Great Muppet Caper, A Muppet Family Christmas and The Muppet Christmas Carol. Lips also appears in newest movie.
Lips rarely took part in sketches or scenes away from the band, but did manage a few trumpet solos.
