Brendan mentions the jump in quality from Super Mario Bros to Super Mario Bros 2. I disagree with this statement since the Western Super Mario 2 is not originally a Mario game. It’s just a redone Yume K?j?: Doki Doki Panic. Nothing in this game, besides Mario, Luigi, Toadstool, and Peach, appear in the Mario world after it. Even in the end it’s a dream! So, the jump in game quality is really between Mario 1 (1985) and Mario 3 (1990).

Birdo, Pokey, and Shy Guy all come from Super Mario 2 and are now mainstays. The ability to pick up items is now a permanent fixture in all Mario games. Even in Smash Bros, Peach’s floating is lifted from this game. I understand that the game wasn’t developed from the ground up, but I would disagree that it holds no weight in Mario cannon.
