Being a geek with little money is a hard thing to manage. Because “Geek Culture” encompasses all things technology and media related it can be hard to remain current when you can’t afford the newest comic books, video games, toys and anything else that catches your obsessive fancy. I have been an on again/ off again geek-on-a-budget my whole adult life (all 10 years of it) and I’ve found ways of keeping my spending beast at bay during the on again periods.

Friends Indeed…

Since geeks hang with geeks it is safe to say that at least one of your friends will have something you want. Now, I’m not saying you should go out and rob your bff of their awesome stuff, but I’m sure if you ask nicely they’d let you borrow some. A good borrowing, lending system between friends can be one of the easiest ways to get what you need without over-spending. Share your resources with them and they’ll be open to sharing with you.

This is also a great way of being introduced to new things without investing anything. For example, I had never read any of Ben Templesmith’s stuff until Kim forced it upon me (in a loving kind of way). I now love his work and know if I can’t afford to buy for myself I can always borrow more from her. The same system is there for when we want to share books, video games and movies with each other. It’s pretty fantastic!

Geek Shirt from ThinkGeek.com

Lately I have been thinking about what it means to be a geek or a nerd and what it means to use this label on yourself. I am a self proclaimed “all of the above”, but what does this really mean?

Back in high school I remember the terms geek and nerd being the last label anyone wanted because it put you on the lowest rung of the social ladder. If you showed any sign of real intelligence your were called a nerd and if you enjoyed extra curriculum activities that didn’t include sports you were labeled a geek. Either way it meant high school was going to feel like hell. I know it did for me.

Fast forward 10 years. Pop culture is replaced with Geek culture as Hollywood adapts comics, books and video games. Animator, video game designer and web developer have taken the place of lawyer, banker and doctor as lucrative careers. And being tech savvy has the potential of making you a millionaire. In a blink of an eye the labels of geek and nerd climbed the ladder and can now be worn with pride… almost.

In the new year I am hoping to redesign and convert Geekin’ Out into what it was originally conceptualized to be – an online zine all about the geeky things in life. It sort of is that now, but I want to push it even more and I’m also looking for volunteer writers to help make posts a lot more frequently as well as provide multiple views of the geek culture.

If you are interested in writing on a volunteer basis throw me an email at bree@geekin-out.com.

Cookie Party - Sarah Silverman Programme

Cookie Party - Sarah Silverman Program

Inspired by The Sarah Silverman Program, on Tuesday August 12th my friends and I participated in the very first Cookie Party!

If you have never seen The Sarah Silverman Program you have no idea what I’m talking about. Well, on the show Sarah and her sister are huge fans of a television show called Cookie Party which is hosted by a cross dressing “Miniature Coffee” and features two teams in a battle of the cookie. As fans of both Sarah Silverman and cookies my friends decided to have a cookie party of their own.
