Below is a list of comic book series that are favourites of mine. They are in no particular order and are all worth checking out.

Fables vol. 1

Fables vol. 1

Fables

Written by Bill Willingham
Publisher: Vertigo

The characters of popular fables and faerytales are hiding out in New York city after being driven out of their world by the mysterious Adversary. The series takes you into the political and private worlds of a number of familiar fables – Snow White, Rose Red, Bigby (big bad) Wolf, Boy Blue – while they deal with the continuing war with the Adversary.

The first 11 trade volumes have been released, the 12th due in August, and is still ongoing as individual floppies. This series is NOT suitable for children due to language, sex & violence. (That’s how you know it’s good)

Since I left off in December let me catch my one reader up to what geek things I’ve been up to.

Fables vol. 10

Fables vol. 10

Between January and March I managed to find a copy of every Fables trade that has been released and read them all. This is probably the best series I have ever read and if you aren’t already reading it go out and buy the first two volumes RIGHT NOW! Why the first two? Well, the first one just isn’t enough to get you fully hooked so you’ll want to read the second one right away to really feel the effect of the story. Once you’ve done that, go out and buy the rest because I can guarantee you’ll be drooling for more.

Also during my run with Fables I picked up another Bill Willingham title – House of Mystery vol. 1. From what I read in the first volume I’m looking forward to the second, but I still have a while to wait on that one. The saddest part about my coming to love Bill Willingham’s work this year was he was Emerald City Comic Con LAST year and I missed my chance to meet him. Hopefully he’ll make a return visit to the con in the coming years.

Batman R.I.P

Batman R.I.P

It’s been a long time since I’ve last written and I’m going to attempt to be better at this blogging thing. I’m unfortunately the type of person to get really excited about a project, work on it for a while and then push it aside for the next “big idea”. I won’t let this become one of them.

So, I’m going to spend today catching up on some posts long overdue, and the first is a review of Batman R.I.P. written by the amazing Grant Morrison and art by Tony Daniel. Now, I say Grant Morrison is amazing because he has written two of my favourite books – All Star Superman and Batman: Arkham Asylum – and since I’m a girl the fact he’s a snappy dresser and has a wicked accent also helps me give him this label.

The Watchmen

The Watchmen

With the movie coming out in six months the buzz around Watchmen is getting loud – especially since the trailer is being run before The Dark Knight. In July and August combined the comic sold over 62,000 copies from comic specialty stores – this doesn’t include regular book stores like Chapters – and will most likely continue to fly off the shelf until March 2009.

Just like the other 62,000 people (and counting) I jumped on this bandwagon and picked myself up a copy of the book. Now, most true comic book fans will shun me for not having read “one of the greatest graphic novels ever written” until now, but I had my reasons. (more…)
