Below is a list of comic book series that are favourites of mine. They are in no particular order and are all worth checking out.
Fables
Written by Bill Willingham
Publisher: Vertigo
The characters of popular fables and faerytales are hiding out in New York city after being driven out of their world by the mysterious Adversary. The series takes you into the political and private worlds of a number of familiar fables – Snow White, Rose Red, Bigby (big bad) Wolf, Boy Blue – while they deal with the continuing war with the Adversary.
The first 11 trade volumes have been released, the 12th due in August, and is still ongoing as individual floppies. This series is NOT suitable for children due to language, sex & violence. (That’s how you know it’s good)
Mouse Guard
Written & illustrated by David Peterson
Publisher: Archaia
This story takes us into a rich world where mice are bipedal creatures with their own political society that is protected by a group called the Mouse Guard. The book mostly follows a small group of the Guard – Liem, Saxon, Kenzie & Sadie – as battle predators, weather and other obstacles to ensure the survival of mousekind.
There are currently two volumes of Mouse Guard available – Fall 1152 & Winter 1152 – and starting in the fall a new series will be starting that is a prequel to the other two volumes. This book considered all ages, but it does contain violence.
Wormwood: Gentleman Corpse
Written & illustrated by Ben Templesmith
Publisher: IDW
A hilariously dark story about a sentient worm named Wormwood that possess and reanimates corpses so he may participate in drinking, sex and violence. This badass worm also happens to be, together with his surly robot and gang of ass kicking strippers, a protector against other dimensional, supernatural attacks. Whether it be tentacle monsters, randy Leprechauns or giant squids Wormwood is ready.
Three volumes have been released and I hope more is to come. Definitely not for kids.
Locke & Key
Written by Joe Hill
Art by Gabriel Rodriguez
Publisher: IDW
After the murder of their father the rest of the Locke family retreat to the old family home in Lovecraft, Massachusetts. It is soon found out by the youngest Locke child – Bode – that the house is more than what it seems. First he finds a door that kills you after walking through it (not to worry, as a ghost if you back the way you came you come back to life) along with a mysterious woman stuck inside of a well. Bode is told by the woman that the house contains a number of keys that when used can do great magicand sends him on a quest to find one that will set her free.
The first volume Welcome to Lovecraft is currently released while the second volume Head Games is still being run as single issues. This is not suitable for young kids – I’d say more PG-13 style.
The Sword
Written & illustrated by The Luna Brothers
Publisher: Image
How would you feel if you found out your father was thousands of years old and happened to own a mystical sword that was wanted by a trio of sibling demi-gods? Well, this is exactly what happens to Dara Brighton after the murder of her family. Now that her father is dead she is the possessor of the sword and must protect herself, the sword and the world from the spiteful siblings.
Two volumes – Fire and Water – have been released and is still in publication as single issues. This book is also not for children as it contains harsh words and lots of awesome gory violence. No sex yet though.
